The last two times I’ve made these, I used 93% lean ground turkey, but you can also use ground beef. I think the 99% lean ground turkey gets too rubbery sometimes. Even though it’s lower in fat, I rarely buy it. If you’re going to go the healthier route and use ground turkey, choose the 93% not the 99%. These make a very yummy dinner with minimal effort. They taste amazing, and are such a quick and easy treat. I love to make these when I want a homemade dinner and don’t have very much time. Andrew seems to think I’ve spent hours slaving over the stove with these, but really I can whip them up in a flash.
Serves: 4 Time: 25 minutes
- 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground beef or turkey
- 1 1/2 cups Ketchup
- 1/4 to 1/2 cups water
- salt and pepper to taste
- 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
- Heat oil in medium sauce pan until shimmering. Add onion and cook until soft, 3-5 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add meat, breaking up with wooden spoon. Cook until browned.
- Add ketchup and a bit of the water, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Cook until thickened, about 15 to 20 minutes. Add more ketchup and water if needed. Serve on buns. (I used toasted whole-wheat above).
